I think all Sci-Fi enthusiasts revel in seeing new inventions that echo the technologies of fiction. I often wonder if inventors and great thinkers are influenced by Sci-Fi, or if one of the aspects of being a great Sci-Fi writer is being able to tap into the path of futuristic technology. In reality, it’s probably a mixture of both.
In one of the most iconic scenes in Star Wars, Luke loses his hand. The audience, watching in a galaxy far, far away, is brought closer to the hero in that moment. The chips are down. He’s lost an arm. He’s emotionally and physically weakened. Gaining a mechanical arm and coming back stronger is one of the things that makes Luke a truly human hero. And after watching these videos, you’ll have a two or three new heroes to consider for your character sketches.
In this video, by Discovery News, amputee Pierpaolo Petruzziello demonstrates the success of a bionic experiment that allows him to move his hand using his mind. Additionally, the robotic hand has skin sensors that provide tactile feedback to the brain.
This robotic hand can be controlled through the forearm muscles of the amputee’s lost limb.
Sure, all of these medical advancements are great for humanity, but I know what you’re really wondering. “Hm…Okay, so how soon until we use this robotic technology FOR DESTRUCTION?!”
HULK SMASH!
